Mr. Smith lives around the corner from us. He is famous for watering his front lawn wearing only a black Speedo. He waters his front lawn a lot. I try not to think of this as he tells me I managed to get thirty-five percent in math, which I am guessing is as low as the marking scale goes. Either that or the first thirty-five percent of the marks comes from spelling your name correctly at the top of the page. My options are to repeat the year in the fall or sign up for summer school.

Two months seem much shorter now than it was in the land of childhood. Now, months come and go so fast it seems like a waste of money to buy a calendar, even if it does have an adorable kitten on each new page. But when you are a high school kid, once that final bell rings on June 30, there is an endless stretch of sloth waiting outside the door. By law, this stretch should be filled with sleeping in, hanging out at the beach, eating Popsicles and trying to avoid cutting the lawn. The specter of knuckling down on academics in September isn’t even lurking in the shadows. But faced with a choice between six weeks of summer school and spending another entire ten months getting my mandatory-credit ticket properly punched, I was at least smart enough to do the math.
